Why Yoga & Arthritis are Best Friends.

Updated: Jul 20, 2023

Arthritis is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It can cause pain, stiffness, and inflammation in the joints, making it difficult to move around and perform everyday tasks. But did you know that yoga can be a powerful tool in managing the symptoms of arthritis?

I have lived with rheumatoid arthritis since the age of 20. At my worst I had very limited mobility and needed help getting dressed and walking was a no go. But yoga (along with the right medication) has been the tool that has helped me get from limited mobility to certified yoga instructor! And honestly my body had never felt better.

So, in this blog post, we'll explore the benefits of yoga for those with arthritis, and how it can help improve mobility and reduce inflammation.

1. Gentle Movement: One of the most significant benefits of yoga for arthritis is gentle movement. Yoga poses can be tailored to suit any body, regardless of age or fitness level. Even those with limited mobility can benefit from the gentle stretching and movement that yoga offers. With time and patience, yoga can help to improve joint flexibility and mobility, making it easier to move around with less pain.

2. Reduced Inflammation: Arthritis is often associated with inflammation in the joints. Yoga has been shown to reduce inflammation in the body, which can help to alleviate the symptoms of arthritis. Regular practice of yoga can help to reduce the production of inflammatory markers, leading to less pain and stiffness.

3. Improved Balance: Arthritis can affect balance, making it difficult to walk or stand for extended periods. Yoga can help to improve balance by strengthening the muscles in the legs and core. This can help to reduce the risk of falls and improve overall stability.

4. Reduced Stress: Arthritis can be a stressful condition to manage, with pain and mobility issues often impacting daily life. Yoga can be a great stress reliever, helping to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. This can help to improve overall mood and quality of life.

5. Improved Sleep: Arthritis can also affect sleep quality, making it difficult to get a good night's rest. Yoga has been shown to improve sleep quality by reducing stress and promoting relaxation. This can lead to better overall health and wellbeing.

6. Improved Mental Health: Arthritis can take a toll on mental health, leading to feelings of depression and anxiety. Yoga can help to improve mental health by promoting mindfulness and reducing stress. This can lead to improved overall wellbeing and a more positive outlook on life.

As you can see, yoga can be a powerful tool in managing the symptoms of arthritis. With its gentle movement, reduced inflammation, improved balance, reduced stress, improved sleep, and improved mental health, yoga can make a real positive impact on the lives of those with arthritis.
